Sonya “Sunny” Michelle Wood, 46, a lifelong Newport News resident passed away on Thursday, December 21, 2023, after a Cardiac Arrest.Sunny was a free-spirited individual and fighter who demonstrated immense resilience throughout her life. Sunny was a loving mother to her twin boys, Austin and Aidan Smoot.
Sunny was preceded in death by her grandparents, Sam and Marianne Wood and the love of her life, Russell Tatum. She is survived by her loving parents, Dale and Terri Wood; her brother, Michael Wood and his wife, Lara; nephew, Brody and her grandparents, Wayne and Evelyn Crandol, and Burgan and Pat Grigg. Sunny had a lifelong, close-knit family, which included: her favorite Aunt MeMe, Marsha Price, (James) and many extended aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends.
Sunny graduated from Warwick High School and later at the age of 19 she was in a car accident that left her paralyzed with multiple health issues for the remaining 27 years of her life. Sunny did not let her disability hold her back from accomplishing her dreams. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in psychology from CNU and her master’s degree in counseling at VCU. She always had a passion for helping others and worked as a mental health counselor and disability rehabilitation counselor before having her children. Sunny desired nothing more than becoming a mother, and loved her boys, Austin and Aidan with all her heart.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held to honor Sunny’s memory at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 29, 2023 at Weymouth Funeral Home. Although Sunny will be deeply missed by her family and all who loved her, we find comfort in knowing she suffers no more. Her memory will forever be cherished by her family and friends.
