Ned Winfree Midkiff, 81, went to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on April 10, 2023.  Ned was born in Radford, VA and grew up in Newport News.  He was a member of the Newport News High School Class of 1959.  It was at Newport News High that his passion for sports, basketball and football, was cultivated.  He was a great athlete and enjoyed sharing that passion with others, especially his kids.  Ned was loved by many and fostered many friendships that were lifelong. He was devoted to his parents and remained close to his brother and sisters throughout his life. Ned entered Newport News Shipbuilding in 1960 and rose to the rank of Manager in the X43 department during a career that spanned 40 years. He enjoyed all kinds of building projects from tree houses to workbenches, to pretty much fixing anything that was broken around the house.  He was our number one fix-it man to call.  Ned truly adored his grandchildren and always made time to be with them celebrating holidays, attending school programs, and cheering them on from the sidelines. He felt most at-home at the beach, particularly the Outer Banks, and lived there for many years. Ned’s passions were always fishing, the Forty-Niners, friends, and above all else his family!

Ned was preceded in death by his parents, James and Bessie Midkiff and his brother, Lanny Midkiff. He is survived by his children, Cindy Midkiff, Buddy Midkiff (Annie), and Kristen Beal (Jeff); sisters, Grace Scarpa (Michael) and Patsy Mooney (Jimmy); sister-in-law, Lynda Midkiff; nephews Lee Midkiff (Dawn), Jamie Mooney (Sally), Timmy Mooney (Darcy) and grandchildren, Macon and Grant Kennedy and Christian and Angelina Midkiff.

We would like to thank the staff of The Mennowood Retirement Community where Ned resided for the past 15 years following a catastrophic health incident.  Their loving and compassionate care was truly remarkable.

A Celebration of Ned’s Life will be held at 12 Noon on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 at Weymouth Funeral Home with visitation to follow. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be sent to the Boys and Girls Club of Virginia Peninsula. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.
