NANCY LITZ WOOD

Nancy Litz Wood died peacefully at home surrounded by members of her family on May 10, 2018. Born Nancy Ann Litz in Cleveland, Ohio, Nancy was the daughter of Wayne Pinkerton Litz and Helen Sherlock Litz. She leaves her husband of 66 years, retired NASA scientist, Dr. George Wood and her three daughters, Judy, Dee, and Jennifer. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Nancy met her sweetheart, George, at Roanoke College and they were married at Cave Spring Methodist Church in Roanoke, Virginia. For 66 years, they were lifelong partners, companions, and soul mates who shared a love for traveling the world, engaging in their community, and most of all, relishing their family. Nancy, always proud of George’s accomplishments, beamed from the stands, spellbound as a shuttle launched his experiments into outer space. Without question, she embraced and celebrated his research and discovery as a shared endeavor. Nancy’s three girls were her treasures. She did not simply raise them, she partook in their lives, volunteering at their schools, leading girl scout troops, chasing missed buses, and baking limitless batches of last-minute cookies. To her children and grandchildren, in the gentle way in which she moved through the world, she was a role model of kindness and empathy. A curious lifelong learner, Nancy returned to college to receive her bachelor’s degree in Art History from Christopher Newport College. Her love of research, adventure, and culture inspired her to become an impassioned travel agent. Taking the time to know each client and their interests, she meticulously personalized each experience that she planned. She delighted in learning about and sharing the most unique, spectacular destinations. Nancy, deeply influenced by the warmth and humor of her father and grandmother, maintained her playful, intelligent wit throughout her life. Known for her ease in conversation, generous spirit and radiant, contagious smile, Nancy illuminated every place into which she entered. Magically, she made everyone feel special, valued, and loved. Her friendships were for a lifetime; for everyone fortunate enough to know her, Nancy was an advisor, supporter, and confidant without peer, always there in time of need, never asking anything for herself. She was the pinnacle of thoughtfulness, remembering her extensive circle of family and friends for every special occasion.

The family is grateful beyond words for the support and care Nancy received in her last months, beginning with George and Nancy’s dedicated, compassionate caregivers, who continue to support the family each day; the endearing, tireless oncology nurses at Mary Immaculate Hospital, and Nancy’s extensive group of loving, supportive friends.

A celebration of Nancy’s life for family and friends will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 20, 2018 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Nancy’s memory can be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Newport News, VA 23601, where she was a dedicated member for many years.
