Luz Maria Velez, 75, passed away Thursday, July 6, 2017 at home surrounded by her family. Born in Puerto Rico, she spent most of her adult life in New York before moving to the Peninsula in 1992.
She worked for many years as a seamstress in the garment industry in Manhattan. Luz was a homemaker in the truest sense of the word. She was devoted to her family and loved caring for her children and grandchildren.
Mrs. Velez was preceded in death by her parents, Martin Ruiz and Rosa Cruz, and brother, Angel Ruiz. She is survived by her loving husband, Luis Velez; four daughters, Gladys Solano (Peter) of Newport News, Zoraida LaSanta of New York City, Marilyn Burgos (Angel) of New Kent, VA, and Annie Velez (Arteast Griffin) of Newport News. Also surviving are three sisters, Santa Brown of Newport News, and Aurea Davila and Aida Cruz, both of New York City; seven grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m., Saturday, July 8 at Weymouth Funeral Home. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, July 9, 2017 in Peninsula Memorial Park by Chaplain Vernita Baldwin. Please enter by the Nettles Dr. gate.
