We announce with sorrow the passing of our mother, Lona Newman Ross on Saturday, August 19, 2023. Lona was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and sister. She was a dedicated community volunteer and congregational leader of Temple Sinai in Newport News, VA. Lona was a lifelong learner and advocate for women’s education. She was a longtime member of AAUW, NCJW, Great Books and most recently a supporter of Girls in STEAM.
Lona is survived by her daughters, Laura (Skip) Spencer and Caryn (Gil) Akons; and three granddaughters, Claire, Liza, and Sivan.
A Graveside Service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 22, 2023 at Peninsula Memorial Park, 12750 Warwick Blvd, Newport News, VA 23606. Immediately following the service, the family will be sitting shivah at Lona’s home in Newport News. The family will also be sitting shivah on Thursday, August 24th from 5:30-8:30pm at the home of Caryn and Gil Akons in Rockville, MD. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.
