On June 24, 2017, John Frederick “Fred” Michie Jr. met his heavenly Father and started his next adventure at the age of 95.
Fred would tell his life story to anyone he could corner and it always started with, “I was born at a very early age in Newport News so I would be close to my mother.”
He was a World War II veteran and served in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters as a Merchant Marine. For many years he was a deacon at North Riverside Baptist Church. He was a great father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and talked about them to anyone that would listen.
He was a super salesman for a number of companies that included Pitney Bowes. The work he was most proud of was his years with the North Carolina and Virginia Baptist Children’s Homes. His last 23 years was with Weymouth Funeral Home.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Thompson Michie of 54 years; his companion for 21 years, Joy Garrett; sisters, Nancy Grenier, Dorothy Pittman, Coretta Pepe, and Mary Ann Parker.
He is survived by his son, John Frederick Michie III and his wife Frances; his grandson, John Frederick Michie IV; granddaughter, Karyn Michie Buckley and husband Matt; two grandsons, Andrew Buckley and Daniel Buckley; sister, Faith Newcomb; brothers, Joe Michie and Jerry Leggett; brother-in-law, Robert Thompson and his wife Sandra Thompson, and a large number of cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 12:00 Noon, Thursday, June 29, 2017, at the Weymouth Funeral Home Chapel by Rev, Chris Gourley. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service starting at 11:00am. Interment will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to ACS, Relay for Life. Arrangements are by Weymouth Funeral Home.
