John P. Lockwood, 87, of Newport News, departed this life Saturday, March 24, 2018 to join our Lord and Savior. His memory is cherished by the love of his life, wife of 56 years Carol Ann Lockwood; daughter, Allison Moffatt; son, Brian Lockwood (Cynthia); grandson, Justin Sloane (Amber) and great-grandsons, Sebastian, Taber, Oliver, and Leo of Poquoson; son, John Neal Lockwood (Renee) of Barhamsville; son, David Lockwood (Suzanne) of Mechanicsville; grandson, Christopher John Lockwood (Sarah) and great-granddaughter, Anna of Newport News; granddaughter, Rachael Moffatt of Richmond; beloved family in Massachusetts and Florida; countless friends who are now as family and a world with no strangers, only friends to cultivate.
Born in Hempstead, New York, John enlisted in the Army after high school. He married Carol Rakes in 1961. In 1963, Army duties brought them to Virginia, where they raised their family. John served in Korea and Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Army Commendation medals. John also authored the Army manuals for celestial navigation and helicopter maintenance.
After retiring with 22 years’ service in the Army, the family moved to Isfahan, Iran. There John taught helicopter maintenance to the Iranian army and collected Persian carpets, along with more lifelong friends. Upon returning to Virginia, John used his knowledge of rugs to open the Oriental Rug Place with locations in Hilton and Oyster Point. There he entertained anyone who wandered in; shared tea, donuts, laughter, and tall tales; taught the history of handmade rugs; and occasionally sold a few carpets. John and Carol have been active members of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church (OLMC) in Newport News for nearly 40 years.
After retirement, John and Carol entertained friends and family, kept busy at OLMC and traveled. They made many pilgrimages including Fatima, Portugal; Lourdes, France; Rome; Jerusalem; and Medjugorje in Bosnia to witness the Marian visionaries as they described their encounters with Our Blessed Mother.
The family will receive friends from 12:00-2:00pm on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, 100 Harpersville Rd, Newport News. The Funeral Mass to celebrate John’s life will begin at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the OLMC, Pregnancy Outreach Ministry.
The family thanks those who have prayed for healing, visited, and for many gifts of love and laughter during John’s illness, especially the OLMC community. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.
