Jacqueline M. Gary, 85, passed away on Tuesday morning, July 27, 2021 after a brief illness. She was the loving wife of Charles “Charlie” D. Gary, Sr for 66 years. She was a Newport News native, graduate of Newport News High School and long-time member of First Christian Church in Hampton. In her youth, Jackie enjoyed singing in the choir and dancing. Later, she loved antiques, particularly her miniature collection.  She worked in the proof and bookkeeping departments for Bank of Virginia and as a teller at First City/First American Bank, but her true devotion was to her family. She was an excellent cook who took special care to ensure everyone had their favorite dishes at family meals. Holidays were especially important; Thanksgiving and Christmas meals were legendary. She started the planning process months in advance, searching far and wide for special items and stayed up throughout the night to ensure everything was ready for the special day.

Jackie fed everyone who stopped by and always packed homemade meals for her husband, Charlie, to share with friends at the racetrack. She took special pride in her grandchildren who affectionately called her Nanny. She loved attending Grandparents Day functions and football or soccer games. She was always available to comfort a sick grandchild when their parents had to work.

Jackie was a beautiful lady both physically and spiritually who built a wonderful family with Charlie. They will always be comforted by the guidance and love she provided.

Jackie was predeceased by her mother and father, Lorene P. Martens and Daniel D. Martens, Jr. and her sister, Jeannine P. Martens.  In addition to her loving husband, Charlie, she is survived by three children, Linda G. Doland (Michael), Lisa G. Ferguson (Jon), and Charles David Gary, Jr. (Debbie North); her four grandchildren, Laura D. Crocker (Gregory), Jennifer M. Shizas (Demetri), Andrea C. Doland, and Colin D. Gary (Cami Castleberry) and four great-grandchildren, Nathaniel P. Crocker, Nico D. Shizas, Isaac B. Crocker, and Natalee C. Shizas. She is also survived by Cheryl Gary who was like a daughter to her as well as many cousins, a brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, and friends she loved dearly.

We would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to the nurses, doctors, infusion department professionals and staff at Riverside Regional Hospital for their compassionate care for both Jackie and our family during her recent illness. Their concern and kindness for all of us is very much appreciated.
