Surrounded by his family, Jack L. Locke, Sr., 96, was peacefully escorted home by the angels to be with his Lord and with his beloved wife of 68 years, Betty (Bett), on Sunday, February 11, 2018. Affectionately known as Daddy to his children Paula Bollinger (Morris), Kathy Winstead (Rick) and Jack Locke, Jr. (Kay), and Granda to his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren Amy Andresen (James and Heather), Melanie Cline (Keegan, Kaylee and Hadlee) Travis Winstead (Katherine and Wesley) and Kristin Reid (John and Josie), he was wonderfully loved and will be terribly missed by us all.
Jack was a WWII veteran and a Purple Heart and Silver Star recipient. Born in Wood River, Illinois, he moved his family to Newport News in 1955 to work at the Amoco Refinery in Yorktown, where he retired in 1981.
He was an avid golfer and a greens marshal at Deer Run for many years. He loved volunteering with Bett and received the 6500 hours volunteer award at Mary Immaculate Hospital where he served at the Information Desk and co-chaired the Mardi Gras for 14 years. He was a 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus and served on the Special Olympics committee and Adopt a Highway program. He was awarded the Lifetime Citizenship Award by the City of Newport News in 2011.
Jack loved Bett and his family and they always came first. He never missed an activity where his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were involved, whether it was a band competition, a cheerleading competition, a softball game or a field hockey event. Some of our most cherished memories will be his stories growing up, his travels with Bett out West, and family vacations to Illinois, Las Vegas, and the mountains of Tennessee. For several years Granda and Grandmother took all the grandchildren on a week’s vacation, traveling to Washington DC, and Pennsylvania.
He always told us not to cry and be sad when it was time for him to go because he had a wonderful family and a great life.
Although our hearts are broken we are comforted knowing he and his sweetheart Bett, are together again smooching, holding hands, and dancing together for eternity.
A memorial service and reception will be held at 2 pm, Saturday, February 17 2018 at Weymouth Funeral Home.
