Gary Stephen Wheeler, 68, passed away Friday, July 30, 2021 in his hometown of Newport News, VA. He was battling a recent illness and after putting up a good fight he said goodbye with his loving family by his side. Gary was born in Portsmouth, VA. He received his master’s Mechanical License and worked for many years in the heating and air conditioning department for NASA. Gary finished his career as the Supervisor of HVAC for Newport News Public Schools and he retired after 32 years on July 1, 2020. He was greatly loved and appreciated by his co-workers. From a young age, Gary was a man of high integrity, a provider and a protector. He was a faithful and devoted husband to his wife of 40 years. Gary was proud of his children, adored by his young grandchildren and loved by his neighbors. He was not a man of many words but when he spoke, he was quick-witted, clever and very funny. Gary was highly accomplished, yet humble. He loved being active and spending time outside in the yard and in his garage.
Gary was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley Wheeler; his father, Frederick Eugene Maxwell and his brother, Timothy Maxwell. Gary is survived by his loving wife, Shari; their son, Ryan and his wife, Arielle and their son, Finnegan; his daughter, Jill Stephens and her children, Gracie, Lincoln and Olivia; his daughter, Amy Miller; his sister, Susan Griffith and her husband, Ben and their daughters and grandchildren; his sister, Teresa and her children and grandchildren; his newly united brothers and sisters who gave him much love and support sadly late in his life, Christine Maxwell, Carol Lastinger, Frederick E. Maxwell Jr. and Stephanie Maxwell; his father in law, Alan Weiss; his brother in law, Scott Weiss and his children, Hannah and Aaron; his sister in law, Robin Gill, her husband, Chuck and their daughter, Emma and aunts, uncles, cousins and their children.
Gary will be greatly missed and remembered always. All our hearts break as we grieve the loss of a good man who had more life to live.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, August 14, 2021 at Weymouth Funeral Home. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.
