Anna Filomena Napier

Interment: Private

Location: Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veteran's Cemetery

Anna Filomena Napier, 93, of Yorktown, Virginia passed away peacefully on January 4, 2023. Born in a castle in Schlanders, Italy, her family was forced to move to St. Johann in Austria when Italy annexed her home in 1929. In the beautiful area south of Salzburg, much like the opening scenes in The Sound of Music, her childhood was spent helping take care of seven sisters and brothers and avoiding World War II.

Anna met her future husband after the war at a swimming pool in Salzburg. Roy Lee Napier, Jr., was a technical sergeant in the army assigned to transport prisoners to the War Trials in Nuremberg.

Anna moved to the United States in 1948 to marry her “shotzi” and raised her family in Newport News. Along with having four children, one of her proudest moments was becoming a U.S. citizen in 1952.

She was predeceased by her husband, Roy in 2011. She is survived by her four children, Marvin Napier (Debbie), Dennis Napier, MD (Ginny), Pam Carroll (Danny), and David Napier (Barbara); seven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren, who are left to cherish her memory. She is also survived by her sisters, Mena Marth in Munich, Germany, and Hermine Helm in Austria, and their extended families.

Along with being a devoted mother and homemaker, Anna enjoyed craft shows and making her plaster plaques. She also was a “lunch lady” cashier in Newport News Schools. Anna always sent money to help her mother back in Austria. After her husband’s death, she moved to York County to be closer to her children.

Her family would like to thank the doctors and devoted staff at The Hamilton Assisted Living and York Nursing and Rehabilitation for their kind and compassionate care.

Funeral arrangements were by her wish private, and she will be interred with her husband at the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veteran’s Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia. Donations of sympathy can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s’ Hospital. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.

I was a friend of Anna from Paul's Arts and crafts. We enjoyed having lunch out with other senior employees from the store and I would also visit her at her home in Yorktown but unfortunately covid stopped all that. We did continue talking and laughing on the phone.I loved Anna and will truly miss her.She was a special lady.
