Location: Weymouth Funeral Home

Visitation: Following the Service

Location: Weymouth Funeral Home

Mason Owen Dunkley, loving husband and father, passed away to his eternal home in Heaven on Sunday, January 15, 2023 at the age of 63. Mason was born and raised in Hampton, Virginia and later resided in York County for many years with his wife and son. Mason graduated from Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School in 1987 and furthered his education at Thomas Nelson Community College where he attained a degree in Mechanical Engineering.  He was an expert in his field as an Engineering Technician in department E68 at the shipyard for 40 years.

Mason was a good-natured and kind man who was always upbeat and had a joke and a smile for everyone. He used his knowledge of machinery to help fix and rebuild things and was the first to volunteer help for family and friends. He loved the outdoors, spending time with his family, vacations in the Outer Banks, walking his dog, fishing, tinkering, fixing up his boat, and growing the best tomatoes you have ever tasted.  Most recently he enjoyed visiting his son Evan, a chef at Marker 20, who would prepare a wonderful fish dinner for him.  He always had a smile, a kind word, and a funny story to tell and will be truly missed.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Agnes Lindler; father, Melvin Dunkley; his stepfather, Al Lindler, and his brother, William Dunkley.  He leaves behind his loving wife of almost 34 years, Lynda Dunkley; his cherished son, Evan Dunkley, and his beloved dog, Chessie.  Mason was greatly loved by his many brothers and sisters-in-law: Susan Knight, Ann and Jere Null, James and Jamie Ball, Nancy and Todd Rose, Jenny and Butch Jones and thirteen adoring nieces and nephews as well as his many friends who loved him.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at Weymouth Funeral Home. The family will recieve friends follow the service. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.

I remember meeting Mason in March 2017 at Newport-News Shipbuilding a few weeks after moving 400 miles south to start my first job out of college. It was a culture shock both professionally and personally moving so far away from home for the first time and Mason was the first person who engaged and attempted to get me to embrace my new, albeit temporary, home in SE Virginia. He talked to me about all the things one could do once it got warmer and all the places to see for fun and for learning the history of the area. I vividly remember him sneaking me out of the office to drive me around the shipyard and showing me as much as he could fit in the few hours that no one would notice me being gone. I'll always appreciate him taking the time to do that when he could've ignored the sulking home sick kid. I'll remember the great times we had after work at breweries enjoying a double bock beer and the jokes he always had prepared for us. My life is better for having met Mason. My condolences

Sad to hear of Mason’s passing. I went to high school with Mason and has the pleasure of working with him for many years at NNS. Always such a nice guy … he will be missed by many.

Mason was a kind person always willing to give a hand. He loved his family including his dog Chessie. Every summer we looked forward to his visits where he would bring bags on delicious tomatoes. We will miss him.
