June Marie Gerlach, 85, died on Monday, January 16, 2023 at Riverside Regional Medical Center. She was born in Neptune City, NJ and lived in Japan as a child.  She had been a Newport News resident for the past 60 years.  She worked at Old Point National Bank for 16 years before becoming a homemaker. She was very active in her children’s lives volunteering as a den mother of the Cub Scouts, a Youth Advisor of the Virginia Junior Quarter Horse Association and 4-H. Her and her husband, Bernie devoted many hours to the Knights of Columbus #5480.  She managed the kitchen during bingo games where her specialty desserts were served for over 30 years. She was always a Jersey girl at heart and loved her New Jersey hard rolls, tomatoes and Jersey submarine sandwiches. Because of her close friendship with the Rooney family, she was a true Pittsburgh Steelers fan. She loved animals, especially dogs and spent many hours watching birds at her birdfeeder.

June was preceded in death by her father, Edwards Charles Fields; her mother, Agnes Marie Maki and her stepfather, Reino Maki; her twin sister, Joan Marjorie Mitchell and her brothers, Charles and James Maki. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Bernard “Bernie” Gerlach; her children, Dale D. Thompson (Joan), Dawn Marie Rossi (Keith) and Bernardine Gerlach (Katie); her 4 grandchildren, Brent, Trevor, Dusty and Casey and her 4 great-grandchildren, Ady, Valerie, Cayden and Chloe and her brother, Frank Maki .

A Memorial Service will be held at 12:30p.m., Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at Weymouth Funeral Home by Deacon Eric Palm. Inurnment will take place at a later date at the St. Jerome Catholic Church Columbarium.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Peninsula SPCA or the Knights of Columbus Council #5480, Walter Pollard. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.
