Peggy Maureen DeLara, 89, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2022. She was much beloved by her family. Peggy was born in Traverse City, MI and was raised by her mother, Dorothy Decker  and stepfather, Glen Hensel, along with her siblings: Ted Langs, Dick Langs, Ron Hensel, Margo Hensel, and Chuck Hensel. In her first marriage Peggy was blessed with her son, Danny Crook, in 1954 before she found and married the love of her life, John Earnest DeLara. In 1965 her treasured daughter, Angela, was born.

Peggy was a loving mother, wife, and grandmother known for bringing her family together over comforting dinners and decadent desserts. She was a vivacious and independent woman and served as a strong role model for her daughter and granddaughters. Capable of captivating a group with a story or something witty she had thought up, she frequently stole the spotlight and always shone it on her loved ones and friends. She was a long-time civil servant and made lasting friendships with her co-workers, entertaining them with humorous stories & creative skits. She was the life of the party and was famous for her baking, particularly chocolate chip cookies.

She was preceded in death by her son, Danny. She is survived by her husband, John; daughter, Angela Winter (Tom) of Newport News; granddaughters, Julie Laferriere (Alex West) and Jennifer Winter and her great-grandson, Benjamin West of Williamsburg.

Her family wishes to thank the staff at Greenfield Senior Living of Williamsburg for taking care of her like family. Through her battle with Alzheimer’s and dementia, she kept a grateful spirit and radiated kindness to all those around her. Thankfully, she never lost her signature sass. Her family will feel her presence in the morning sunshine; reminding us of her infectious laughter and warmth. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.
