Clara Robinson

Memorial Mass: 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 23, 2022

Location: St. Jerome Catholic Church

Inurnment: St. Jerome Catholic Church Columbarium

Clara Robinson, 98, died peacefully at home in Newport News on Sunday, Sept 4, 2022.

Clara was born in Olean, NY in 1924. Upon graduating High School, she was recruited to work in Washington, DC during WWII. It was a unique experience for her, taking her far from her small city and confirming an explorer’s zest for life.

Clara & Jim raised their children in Rochester NY, only moving to Virginia in 2010. At the age of 53 she began a welcome and fulfilling career, retiring from the Rochester Police Dept. at age 75. She was a woman graced with integrity, intelligence and a generous nature. Clara was a highly loved employee and angel to countless persons. She was always cheerful & optimistic and selfless -“You are my Sunshine…”. She loved & encouraged family, friends, co-workers & acquaintances. She had an earthy sense of humor, bright blue eyes & engaging smile; giggling over a funny expression or story (committing it to memory to share). She wrote clever ‘ditties’ with a talent for rhyme. She was able to connect with people by her genuine interest, forming deep and lasting friendships. She was a tireless, loyal mother, a delighted Grandma to 10 and Great-Grandma to 14. She was a faith-filled Catholic and had a lifelong zest for knowledge, nutrition, health & civic responsibility and passed these on to her children.

Clara was predeceased by her parents, Amelia (Malik) and John Joseph Smugorzewski; brothers, Leo, Michael, Joseph & Carl; her spouse of 66 years, James A. Robinson Jr. and the eldest of her 8 children, Mary Lou Crist.

She leaves behind her daughters, Sharon Kelly (Michael), Elizabeth Robson, Ruby Farmer; sons, Michael (Johnna), James (Barbara) and John.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 23, 2022 at St. Jerome Catholic Church by Rev. George Prado. Inurnment will follow at the church columbarium. The service can be viewed on the church’s website. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.
