Robert Edward Lewis, Jr.

Robert Edward Lewis, Jr., 87, died peacefully at home on August 31, 2022. Robert “Bobby” was born in Newport News, VA , the first of three sons born to Elsie Whitmore Lewis and Robert Edward Lewis of Newport News and Cape Charles, VA. His grandparents were Virginia Henderson Whitmore and Grover Cleveland Whitmore of Cape Charles and Newport News, and Pearlie Atwill Lewis and Sally Jones Lewis of Newport News who all predeceased him. Bobby graduated from Newport News High School in 1953, and continued on to Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech), where he was a drummer for The Highty-Tighties, the regimental marching band. He also attended University of Richmond and The College of William and Mary. He was employed with Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, Reynolds Metals Corporation, and retired from John J. McMullen & Associates, a Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering firm.

Bobby was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church and the James River Country Club, both in Newport News. As an avid golfer and social member of the club, Bobby carded a hole-in-one at The James River Country Club, however he may be better remembered exercising his engineering and math skills as the Card Room Gang’s “Card Sharp.” He participated in the “OWLS.” He coached Doug’s basketball team at Grace  United Methodist Church and refereed for junior varsity basketball for Newport News Public Schools during his younger years. He enjoyed meeting with many Newport News High School graduates and the alumni lunch group retirees from John J. McMullen & Associates. Snow skiing was a passion where he skied from his condominium at Wintergreen, VA for many years and some black diamond trails in Vail, CO.

Bobby is survived by his wife of 66 years, Barbara Woodward Lewis; his son, Douglas Addison Lewis and his wife, Lisa Bianconi Lewis of Richmond, VA; his daughter, Kimber Atwill Lewis Yerkes and her husband, Harry Estile Yerkes, IV of New Orleans and Fishers Island, NY.

Bobby became a Grandfather September 1 - 28 years ago and “Grumps” or “Grumpsie” was bestowed by them, will be so dearly missed by his six beloved grandchildren, whom he adored: Caroline Woodward Yerkes, Olivia Shae Lewis, Charles Whitmore Yerkes, Spencer Addison Lewis, Charlotte Spofford Yerkes and Emerson Tate Lewis. He is also survived by his brother, Grover Atwill Lewis and his wife, Elizabeth Aydlett

Lewis of Williamsburg, VA;  many cousins, nieces and nephews and his sister-law, Nancy Ellington Lewis. He was predeceased by his brother, Richard Lee Lewis.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 10, 2022 by the Rev. Anne R. Kirchmier, Rector and The Rev. Marc Vance, Associate Rector at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 45 Main Street and River Road, Historic Hilton Village, Newport News, VA 23601. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. Arrangements are under the care of Weymouth Funeral Home.
