Location: 164 Cutspring Arch, Williamsburg, VA 23185

Mary Patterson, 80, passed away on August 13, 2022 in Newport News, VA close to her home in Williamsburg.

Mary was born in California. In 1963, she graduated with a bachelor's degree in education from Washington State University.  She loved teaching history, English, and literature to her 4th, 5th, and 6th graders in California and Colorado.  She was a well-respected, creative, and caring teacher. After her retirement in Colorado, Mary moved to Williamsburg, VA.  She had always wanted to live on the East Coast and finally got her chance.  She loved every minute of her time in Williamsburg; making new friends, spending lots of time with her beloved dog, Benjy, and enjoying all that Williamsburg and VA had to offer.

Mary loved to walk, hike, read, spend time with friends and family, and put her interior design skills to use creating a beautiful home.  She was a life-long learner and constantly attended classes in the community.  She was a very independent and capable person throughout her life. While in Colorado she was very involved with musical theater and chorale.  More than anything she loved spending time with Benjy, her cherished miniature schnauzer, as well as her other beloved, now departed dogs.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Tillotson and Madge Huffman, and her brother Robert (Rusty) Tillotson. She is survived by her daughters, Stacy Niemeyer (husband Jerry) and Holly Gardner; her son, Sean Gardner (wife Becky); her sister, Marcia Kenworth and her four grandchildren, Ivy, Akasha, Sakura, and Onyx. As well as three great-grandchildren, Zaidyn, Aniyah, and Isaiah.

Mary was an incredible mother in so many ways.  She planned elaborate and memorable birthday parties and holidays, involved her children is many types of fun and educational activities, ensured nightly sit-down family meals and book reading time, and worked tirelessly to provide her children with an excellent childhood.  She will be deeply missed and forever loved.  She will be remembered as a kind, loving mother, grandmother, and fabulous "mom" to Benjy.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. ET on Monday, August 29, 2022 at the family home, 164 Cutspring Arch, Williamsburg, VA  23185. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.

Remembrances may be made by donation to an animal shelter or children’s educational charity.
