Wendy Gasteiger Wallio

Memorial Service: 4:00 p.m., Sunday, June 19, 2022

Location: Grace United Methodist Church, 1209 Country Club Road, Newport News, VA 23606

Wendy Gasteiger Wallio,76, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 30, 2022 in her home in Newport News, VA, with her family and four-legged friend, Baron, close.

Wendy was born in Bristol, VA, and baptized the same year at Central Presbyterian Church. She was raised, attended school, enjoyed English-style horseback riding and competition in Bristol. Dabbling in theater, Wendy performed as Frankie in the school’s production of Finders Creepers the year she graduated. She completed her bachelor’s degree in English at The College of William & Mary in the spring of 1968, while being a member of Kappa Delta. Wendy later obtained her Master of Education degree as a School Library Media Specialist from James Madison University, in 1985. This and her educational career led her to publish an article titled “Special Children and the Library Media Center”, on working with special needs children in the library.

Wendy married Peter Wallio in 1969 at the First Methodist Church of Hampton and had two daughters. They raised their daughters in Hampton, VA, and remained as residents of the Hampton area when the girls branched out to begin their own lives. Wendy was by Pete’s side when he preceded her in death on September 30th, 2013.

Wendy served as an educator for Hampton City Schools at Benjamin Syms Middle School, Bethel High School, and Barron Elementary School from 1968 to 1996. Throughout her 28 years of teaching, she taught 9th grade English Language Arts, Drama, Elementary Library Sciences, and Beginning Computer Usage. As an educator, Wendy loved working with children of all ages, creating enriching curriculum, and promoting technical literacy and the love of reading.  In June of 1995, Wendy was recognized for twenty-five years of honored service by the Virginia Education Association.

Retirement did not end Wendy’s commitment to the community. Wendy dedicated her time to groups that serve low-income and homeless communities, including Appalachia Service Project (ASP), Hampton Ecumenical Lodging and Provisions (HELP) network, and the Hampton Roads Good Samaritan Fund. She devoted over 32 years of volunteer efforts to the HELP network, which provides shelter, healthcare, and support services to residents of Hampton and Newport News, and the Hampton Roads Good Samaritan Fund, which provides assistance to the homeless.

Wendy will be remembered by friends and loved ones as a generous person who always gave to those around her in time and gifts. She was thoughtful, caring, a little sassy, and fun. She was also a skilled seamstress, lover of the arts, had a heart for children and loved her students. Wendy could be seen walking her dog around her community with a pleasant word and a smile for those she met on her way. She was truly a great example of how to give of oneself in a way that positively impacts the lives of those around you. She will be missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dean and Esteleen Gasteiger. She is survived by her daughters, Tamara and Kristin; 4 grandchildren, Tyler, Katherine, Samantha, and Aston; her son-in-law, Tripp; her sister, Deanna Schwartz, and brother-in-law, Edward Schwartz II.

A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 19, 2022 at Grace United Methodist Church in Newport News, VA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Hampton Ecumenical Lodging and Provisions (HELP) network or the Hampton Roads Good Samaritan Fund. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.

It was a pleasure taking care of Mrs. Wendy Wallio if only for a weekend. Prayers of comfort for the family and friends.
