Janett Hedgepeth Piazza

Graveside Service: 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 12, 2022

Location: Peninsula Memorial Park

Janett Hedgepeth Piazza, 91, departed this life on January 5, 2022, after a brief illness. Janett was born in Hopewell, VA and spent her early childhood in Henderson, NC. Her family moved to Hampton, VA, when her father found work at Newport News Shipbuilding. Janett graduated from Hampton High School and then from secretarial/ business school, after which she was employed as a secretary at Newport News Shipbuilding. That was where she met the love of her life, John C. Piazza. They married in 1951 and had a daughter, JoAnne, in 1956. Janett and John’s beautiful love story would continue for 53 wonderful years until John’s death in 2004. In the late 1960’s Janett obtained her real estate license and went to work for her younger brother Jerry at Hedgepeth Realty. She really enjoyed her real estate career and loved working with Jerry, as well as with his wife Liz. Janett was active in her community throughout her adult life. She was a member of the Junior Women’s Club of Newport News, where she held several offices. Janett was a loyal member of Hidenwood Presbyterian Church and enjoyed volunteering as a docent in Colonial Williamsburg for a number of years. Janett and John were avid sailors and made many lifelong friends in the local sailing community. They took annual sailing trips up the Chesapeake Bay with a large group of those friends. Janett counted those trips among some of her fondest memories. Many people who knew Janett will remember her as a dedicated walker, who went out at 6 am in all kinds of weather 6 days a week for over 30 years to walk 3 miles with her good friend, Alice Wilson. One of Janett’s favorite pastimes was reading- she enjoyed books on history and travel, biographies, and novels. She always had a basket of books that she was reading next to her favorite chair. Known for her sense of style, you could count on Janett to be impeccably dressed and accessorized at all times. Janett will be remembered for her sense of humor and her ability to tell a good story, and that little spark of “sassy” she had. She was kind and a good listener and people were comfortable confiding in her. Janett truly loved her large extended family and often said she felt lucky to have such close relationships with both her family by birth and her family by marriage. She was a loving mother, who always encouraged her daughter to believe she could accomplish anything and be anything she wanted to be. Supporting members of her family through thick and thin, Janett could always be counted on when any of them needed help.

Janett was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Piazza; her brothers, Willard (“Junior”) Hedgepeth and Jerry Hedgepeth; sisters-in-law, Jane Roy and Joyce Hedgepeth and brother-in-law, Valley Roy. Janett is survived by her daughter, JoAnne Trimbur; son-in-law, Jeffery Trimbur; brothers, Robert Hedgepeth and William Hedgepeth; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Hedgepeth, and many much loved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. She left her fingerprint on our hearts!

A Graveside Service will be held at 1:00p.m. on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at Peninsula Memorial Park by Rev. Andrew Whitehead. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Memorial Fund at Hidenwood Presbyterian Church or to the Salvation Army. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.
