Barbara Jean Jensen

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Barbara Jean Jensen, 84, of Newport News, Virginia, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2021, at Riverside Medical Center, with her son Tom by her side. She was born in Highland Park, Michigan, daughter of Leonard and Dorothy Westfall. She was predeceased by her husband, John K. “Kermit” Jensen.
The Jensens lived In the Virginia Peninsula for many decades, and later retired to Green Valley, AZ and Kitty Hawk, NC. After Kermit passed in 2017, Barbara moved to Newport News.


Barbara was known for her outgoing personality, sense of humor, and love for her family and friends.  She enjoyed her pets, traveling, the beach, and dining.  Her life was full of civic and community involvement, but it was her relationships with other people she cherished most..


Barbara was active in political and charitable activities throughout her life. She was a leader for  the March of Dimes, the United Way, Hampton University and the American Cancer Society.  She also volunteered her companionship and aid to terminally ill cancer patients and elderly people.  Barbara worked throughout her life, for the Peninsula Whips baseball team, Eddy’s Fashion Outlet and the Home Builders Association. Barbara was known for her outgoing personality, her smiling face and her caring nature.


She is survived by her sons, Joel K. Jensen (Elizabeth), of Union, KY, and Thomas L. Jensen of Kitty Hawk, NC. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Thomas Morris-Jensen,  Emma Jensen, Andrew Jensen, Jakob Kramer-Jensen and Joshua Kramer-Jensen. She was predeceased by her sisters Violet Brickler, Gloria Conrey, and Jerri Nowlin.  She is survived by her sister Carolyn Irelan, and two brothers, Dale Westfall  and Bill Westfall. She is also survived by her long time best friend Rosalie Grogan, of Newport News, who cared for Barbara in her final days. Barbara had numerous nieces, nephews and cousins who were dear to her.   A memorial celebration of life will be announced later.  Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Habitat for Humanity.
