Roger A. Garlow

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Roger A. Garlow, LCDR, USCG ret, age 83, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 18, 2021 at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, VA.
He was preceded in death by his parents Melvin C. Garlow and Mayme Garlow; his first wife, Sylvia Garlow; his second wife, Phyllis Garlow; and his son, Michael Garlow. He is survived by his life partner, Penny Arthur; his daughter Laura Yarborough and son-in-law Matt Yarborough; and grandsons, Matthew Yarborough(Ellie), Joshua Yarborough(Nora) and Benjamin Yarborough.
Roger enjoyed a long career in the US Coast Guard and retired in 1985.
In retirement, Roger passionately pursued many interests, a few of which included cycling, dart leagues, swing dancing, and golf. In most recent years, he lived out his dream of playing golf as often as possible at the Kiln Creek Golf Club. Each week he looked forward to meeting his friends for their weekly round of golf, and he played every day that he was able. If he couldn’t be active, he wasn’t happy.
In addition to staying as active as possible, Roger was also passionate about his family and friends. Roger was immensely proud of his three grandsons, and loved hearing about their lives and accomplishments. His family was not limited to his children and grandchildren, but also included the many friends he met along the way. Those he sought to spend time with and those who landed on the bar stool next to him could find themselves in Roger’s family circle. He was larger than life and truly one of a kind. His unique brand of sarcasm and humor will be missed by the many who loved him. But most especially, he will be missed by his partner, Penny and his daughter, Laura.
A Celebration of Life will be planned at a future date to be determined.
