William Edward (Bill) Vaughn, 90, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Newport News, VA on November 16, 2021. Bill lived a rich life and was blessed with a large loving family. He was incredibly proud of his 70-year marriage to his beautiful bride, Patricia and of his children. Bill loved traveling, spending time at the beach and being with his family.  He also really enjoyed “exercising” at Costco for free samples and a hot dog.

Bill grew up in Chicago and moved to Virginia in High School. He met Patricia at Warwick High School and always said that he knew at first site, he would marry her. Bill was an accomplished athlete and was recognized in the Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame. He was a year-round athlete and State Track & Field Champion at Warwick High School. Additionally, he was a star football and basketball player.

He attended Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1953, on a football scholarship and proudly served in the United States Army. He was a successful entrepreneur and ran a commercial contracting business on the Peninsula for many years.  He and his sons converted his machine shop to into Philly’s Sub and Pub (now Sandbar Grill & Pub).

Bill believed in community service and was a long-time member of the Warwick Lions Club. He was politically active and supported numerous local political campaigns, displaying political signs across our community. He always had a point of view, whether you wanted to hear it or not.

Bill loved life and was always the life of the party. The family will cherish many memories and continue to share stories and laughs about Bill’s shenanigans. He had the enjoyment of the past year celebrating with family and friends for his 90th birthday and his 70th wedding anniversary.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Ruey & Ethel Vaughn; sister, Shirley Byrum; his daughter, Victoria Leigh Vaughn and his 2 sons-in-law, Whit Morrow and Bishop Garnett. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Vaughn and children, Debra Morrow, Eddie Vaughn (Renee), Scott Vaughn (Denise), Gary Vaughn (Jennifer); grandchildren, Katie Garnett, James Morrow, Megan and Luke Sigmon, Paige and Kristine Falk, Leigh and David Barton, Nolan Vaughn, Eliza Lavery, Natalie Lavery, Kathryn Vaughn, Natalie Vaughn, Will Vaughn, Hallie Lavery, Robert Vaughn, Ashlynn Vaughn, Zachary Vaughn & great-grandchildren, Graceyn, Thad and Miller and his younger brother, Jerry Vaughn (Becky).

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 21, 2021 at Weymouth Funeral Home with visitation to follow until 4:30 p.m. A Graveside Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at Peninsula Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Warwick Lion’s Club, will be appreciated in Bill’s honor.

Bill was a fun member of the Oyster Point Mariners Lions Club and we loved having him attend meetings and activities. He was always one of my favorite members and lived life with gusto. He always had a smile and a joke to pass along and always made mention of his love, Patricia. Bill is going to be remembered by so many as the truly fun human being he was.
