Location: Hidenwood Presbyterian Church

Douglas Oxley Powell, 92, passed away on Wednesday, October 27, 2021. Doug was born in Huntington, WV in 1929, the son of Virginia Oxley and Raymond Douglas Powell. He graduated from Huntington High School and Marshall University. He attended Medical School for 2 years at West Virginia University and graduated from the Medical College of Virginia. He completed his Internship and Residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the Medical College of Virginia. It was in Richmond that he met and married his wife of 52 years, Harriet Smith Powell, who predeceased him in 2011. They lived in Richmond until the summer of 1960, then spent two years in the United States Air Force in Rantoul, Ill., after which they settled in Newport News.

Doug practiced Orthopedic Surgery with Peninsula Orthopedic Associates in Newport News for over 30 years. Following retirement, he volunteered at the Williamsburg Free Clinic for 20 years providing Orthopedic Medical services. When Doug wasn’t working, he was a dedicated and loving husband and father to his three daughters. Saying Doug was energetic is an understatement. He loved golf, tennis, water and snow skiing, hunting, fishing on one of his many boats, woodworking and building his much loved beach house in the OBX. He never discovered anything he couldn’t fix!

He was a lifetime member of the Presbyterian Church and most recently a member of Hidenwood Presbyterian where he served as a valuable handyman and previously First Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder and a Deacon.

Doug was known as Putter by all who loved him. He is survived by his three daughters, Martha Powell Krepps (Bryan), Julia Powell Musto (William), and Anne Alderson Powell; 5 grandchildren, Bryan Coleman Krepps, Anne Alderson Krepps, Douglas Powell Krepps, Charles Joseph Musto and Alderson Leigh Musto; 1 great-grandson, Samuel Crawford Krepps; his sister, Sally Hermansdorfer; 5 nieces and nephews, Kathy Hermansdorfer, John Hermansdorfer, Mark Hermansdorfer, Thomas McCarthy, and Harry McCarthy.

The family would like to give special thanks to the team of amazing people who took such loving care of Putter: Thomas Jackson, Elaine Williams, Florence Hinton, Mary Anderson, and Joann Cleary.

A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 11, 2021 at Hidenwood Presbyterian Church in Newport News.  The family will receive friends at a reception at the James River Country Club following the service. A private burial will be held prior to the Memorial Service. Donations can be made to The Peninsula Rescue Mission, 3700 Huntington Ave, Newport News, VA 23607 or Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, P.O. Box 2156 Norfolk, VA 23501 (Chkd.org/give). Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.

Dr. Powell was my doctor since my birth 59 years ago. I remember him so fondly cutting my cast off with the saw and him telling me it would never cut me. He always told me I would be fine when I grew up. I trusted him and he was right. Rest in Power and Peace Dr. Powell.
