Guthrie William Sawyer, 97, lived a long adventurous life which ended on October 7, 2021 at Riverside Hospital. Born in Lynn, Arkansas to Robert and Effie Smith Sawyer. He relocated to Virginia and went to work for Southern Materials in his late 20’s retiring with 40+ years of service as a heavy equipment operator/concrete – Jack of all trades, he enjoyed every day. Guthrie had nothing but good to say about the owner, Mr. Hoffhimer.

Guthrie was involved in Southern Gospel Music for over 70 years. He sung with quartets in the early years, then started promoting groups all over the U.S. He truly enjoyed bringing groups in for his all night sings and continued until well into his 90’s. He was truly loved and will be missed.

His favorite saying was, I might be a Baptist but I’m about to have a Pentecostal shout. WELL GLORY!

Guthrie was predeceased by his wife, Corrine; parents, Robert and Effie Sawyer; son, Jimmy; brothers, Paul, Lee H, Levon, Charles and sister, Mary Lewis. He is survived by his best friend and love of his life, Carolyn Phillips; sister, Shirley Watson of Riverview, Florida; three sons, Mark Sawyer and Jeff Sawyer of Virginia, Joel Sawyer of Jamestown, Tennessee; two daughters, Phyllis Sawyer and Rita Waters of Virginia; 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Homegoing Services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m., on Friday, October 15, 2021 at Weymouth Funeral Home, by Pastor Bob Wilson of Victory Baptist Church and Joel Meitz of Messick Baptist Church. Interment will follow the service at Peninsula Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to Tidewater Gospel Music Association (TGMA) C/o Carolyn Phillips, P.O. Box 925, Yorktown, VA 23692, in Guthrie Sawyer’s honor.

Condolences from the Collier family. I know him and my grandfather Emmette Collier were great friends and loved gospel music. I spent much of my youth watching the two of them open the singings with prayers and announcing the groups. May God be with you all in your time of loss.

To my dear Grandaddy, you will be missed terribly, I know that you will be gathering all the angels to form a beautiful group of singers. I take solace in the fact that you are reunited with your lost loved ones, your son Jimmy and especially your first and only true love Mabel. Please give each of them a big hug for me. Rest in Paradise.
