Candice Sullivan Yost

Celebration of Life: 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 25, 2021

Location: Weymouth Funeral Home

Candice Sullivan Yost, 47, passed away on September 17,2021 after a long courageous battle with breast cancer since 2013 and metastatic breast cancer since 2018.

Candice was born in Newport News, VA.  Having graduated from Menchville High School, she went on to graduate from East Carolina University with a major in Criminal Justice.

Candice loved spending time with her family and friends at the beach or anywhere there was water/sand and a nice, cool breeze.  She also enjoyed going to local craft beer festivals with friends, visiting various breweries in the “540,” and exploring islands in the Caribbean.  Candice was a fan of the East Carolina Pirates and Virginia Tech Hokies and loved all good college football games.

Candice thoroughly enjoyed her work in the corrections field for more than 20 years. She developed many long-lasting friendships with her colleagues in the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice, Virginia Department of Corrections, and the U.S. Courts for the Eastern District of Virginia.  Her desire to help others was often evident in the passion for her work.  She was a good friend to many and fiercely loved her family.

Forty-seven years may not seem long, but damn it was good!  To my parents, thank you for your unconditional support of me and my decisions throughout my cancer treatments and my entire life.  I remember my mom saying a piece of her would die with me. I know how hard it must have been watching me during the worst of times.  I love you both even more for this.

To my friends, being an only child, I’ve always cherished my friendships more than anything because I never had siblings of my own.  I never thought I could love my friends more than I did, but going through cancer and having your unconditional love and support made something that is normally so hard, more bearable and peaceful.  Thank you all for the support, donations, fundraiser, food, messages, calls, and visits over the past few years.  It meant the world to me and I love you all so much for it.

A special shout-out to all my doctors, especially Dr. Flavia Kostov with the Peninsula Cancer Institute, my palliative care team and my #1 infusion nurse, Shannon Waldroup, with the Peninsula Cancer Institute at Riverside Regional Medical Center.

Candice was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Lee and Caroline Sullivan and maternal grandparents, Edward and Virginia Hessler. She is survived by her one and only son, Hunter Sullivan Yost; her beloved Goldendoodle, Tank; her son’s father, Charles “Chip” C. Yost, III and her parents, Skip and Ruthann Sullivan and many aunts, uncles, cousins and numerous friends.

For the record, she did not lose her battle with cancer.  When she died the cancer died, so technically it was a tie!

Candice’s wish was to keep things simple. She always loved a good time. Such a life deserves a Celebration of Life, to be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 25,2021 at Weymouth Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers and to anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution, please consider donating in Candice’s memory to:   Here for the Girls, 1309 Jamestown Road, Suite 204, Williamsburg, VA  23185 or plant a tree in her memory.   GOD BLESS
