Richard “Rich” F. Hanley Sr., 62, of Yorktown, VA, peacefully passed on to his Eternal Reward on Sunday, September 19, 2021, at his home and surrounded by his loving family. Born and raised in Ludlow, MA, Rich had a successful 21-year career in the United States Air Force where he courageously fought in the first Gulf War as a gunner on B-52s. He went on to build a beautiful life in Yorktown, VA where he continued his career as a government contractor, graduated with an MBA from the College of William and Mary, and was an active member of the Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Parish and the Olde Port Cove neighborhood community. He was a man of many interests; an avid music listener, sports fan, Moon Pie eating contest winner, and world traveler!

Richard is survived by his adoring wife and best friend of over 37 years, Adrienne D. Hanley; eldest son and namesake, Richard F. Hanley Jr. (Sarah); second son, Kenneth L. Hanley; and youngest child, daughter, Katherine T. Hanley; three grandchildren, Norah, Richard, and Lucy and Norah’s mother, Lindsay, along with countless family members and friends. He will be remembered as a man's man with a heart of gold who was always charitable with his time, talents, and love for his family, friends, and country.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., at Langley Bethel Manor Chapel in Hampton, VA on Thursday, September 23, 2021. The Interment will follow the Service at Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News, with Full Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

He was the brother I never had. I still cannot get my head around this reality. He was the most "alive" person I ever met. He relished every moment of life and it is so ironic that his life should be curtailed. I will never stop missing you, my friend.

Dear Adrienne, Rich, Ken, and Katie,
Please accept my family’s sincerest condolences at this very difficult time. Rich loved you all very much. He fought the good fight and has earned his eternal reward. Find comfort in that thought. He will be missed dearly but he would want you to treasure every memory and love abundantly as he did.

((Hugs)) to all of you!!

With deepest sympathy as you remember Rich. He was a great husband, father, grand-father and friend. Always called him my brother of another mother. Goodbyes are not forever. They simply mean I'll miss you, until we meet again.

I miss my friend Rich and his fun arguments about the merits of Devil Dogs, the Patriots, the Red Sox, and especially his love of his family. Be at peace my old friend.
