The Lord called Jimmy home on Saturday, June 8, 2024. He was 91 years old.

Jimmy was born in East Bend, North Carolina. He moved to Newport News when he was 18, where he met the love of his life, Georgia “Joanne” Leake. They were married for 72 years before her passing just last month.

Jimmy worked for Asplundh Tree Expert Company. He started as a Climber, and worked his way up to Supervisor. He was responsible for 12 separate crews when he retired after 43 years with the company.

Jimmy was a long-time member of Northside Christian Church where he enjoyed being part of the Church’s bowling league, was a youth group leader with his wife, and served as Deacon. He loved reading his Bible everyday, and was on his fourth complete read-through. Even through his decline in health, he still enjoyed having the Bible read to him by his daughter each day.

Over the years, Jimmy owned many Boston Terriers, which all had to have “B” names, leaving behind his latest, Bentley. He was proud of his Native American Heritage, which he inherited from his Cherokee Mother. He enjoyed going to pow wows in our area each year, one year traveling to the National Pow Wow in Washington, D.C., to see representatives from various tribes across the country.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia “Joanne” Carter. He is survived by his daughter, Judy C. Leonard; sons, James L. Carter and John L. Carter; son-in-law, David Leonard; grandchildren, Aimi Hall (Chad), Lori Leonard, Jason Carter; great-granddaughter, Breonna Bohlman; and his sister, Patsy Driver of Yadkinville, NC.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2024 at Weymouth Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home with interment to follow at Peninsula Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests to please consider a donation to Northside Christian Church.

Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.

Judy, Lori, Aimi and family,
We are all so saddened to learn of Pop's passing. Lori has always had wonderful stories to tell of her grandparents and we have always been eager to hear them. Hopefully those cherished stories will bring fond memories to you all and offer comfort at this difficult time. Sincerely, The staff at HREA Hidenwood
