The Lord blessed Joanne by taking her in her sleep on Thursday, May 2, 2024. She was 90 years old.

Joanne was born to George & Annie Leake in Newport News, VA. She was a 1952 graduate of Newport News High School.  She loved her school and being a Typhoon.  In 1967, when the family needed to buy another house, she made sure it was within the NNHS district so her children could attend.

Joanne worked for VEPCO, which is now Dominion Energy, for 33 years before retiring.  In that time, she rose through the ranks to become a supervisor, earning accolades and certificates for her outstanding job.  She took pride in her work, and in her many accomplishments there.

Joanne was a woman of very strong faith.  She was an active and life-long member of Northside Christian Church.  She taught the Jr. High Sunday School class for 25 years. She was a youth group teacher, a member of the choir, and several other groups.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Norman and Robert Leake.  She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Jimmy Carter; daughter, Judy C. Leonard; sons, James L. Carter and John L. Carter; son-in-law, David Leonard; grandchildren, Aimi Hall (Chad), Lori Leonard, Jason Carter and great-granddaughter, Breonna Bohlman.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, 2024 at Weymouth Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home with interment to follow at Peninsula Memorial Park.

The family requests, in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Northside Christian Church.

Joanne was a strong Christian wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. I’ll miss greeting her as I always greated the Carter family each Sunday. She was the anchor of that wonderful
Family that she and Jimmy created. Heaven has received a precious soul.

Every Sunday I would greet Joanne as I was leaving my Sunday school class and she was entering hers. The last time I was there and saw her with her beautiful smile, which she always wore so beautifully, we hugged and visited for a little bit. She was always so kind. Unfortunately we won’t be able to be at her visitation due to being in Hawaii for our daughter’s graduation. Please know that I loved Joanne and how she radiated the love of Christ. She will be missed. May God comfort you all in your loss. Praise the Lord we know she is with her Lord Jesus.
