Mary Ann Johnson (née Sistrunk) passed away peacefully at the age of 94 after an extended illness. Born and raised in Mississippi to John D. Sistrunk and Mary McCay Sistrunk, she graduated in mathematics from Mississippi University for Women and came to Virginia in 1951 to work for NACA (now NASA). It was there she met and married her husband of 60 years, Joseph L. Johnson, Jr. They resided in Newport News, VA to raise their family.

Grace United Methodist Church, where Mary Ann was an active member for over 55 years, was an important part of her life. Over the years she enjoyed participating in numerous aspects of church life and cultivating meaningful friendships that lasted a lifetime. In later years, she shared her love of mathematics by teaching at Hampton Roads Academy. In her retirement, she stayed busy with her gardening, needlework, and watercolor painting. Mary Ann will always be lovingly remembered and missed by her family, friends, and the many people she touched and helped throughout her life.

Mary Ann was predeceased by her husband, parents, and three brothers, Jack, Harold, and Bill. She is survived by her three sons, Lee of Olympia, WA; David of Mary’s Home, MO; and Randy of Washington, DC; as well as four grandchildren, Michael, Joe (Danielle), Chris, and Sam and her cherished sister, Marie Wells of Azle, TX.

The family especially thanks the staff at The Chesapeake, Amedisys Hospice, and the personal caregivers for their loving and attentive care that comforted Mary Ann throughout her illness.

The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at Weymouth Funeral Home. Funeral Services will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home chapel by Rev. Hank Teague with interment to follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.
