Jessie Ray Jenkins, of Lynchburg, VA, passed away on October 26, 2023 at the age of 96. He was born in Halifax, NC, the son of Jessie Reuben and Pauline Adcock Jenkins. He spent most of his early life in Littleton, NC, until he was called upon to serve in the United States Army during World War II. After his discharge, Jessie married and moved his family to Newport News, VA, for employment at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., where he retired after 39 years of service.
Jessie liked to tinker in his garage and grow his own vegetables. He even maintained a small farm in his old hometown, a place he held dear in his heart. It was there, he could visit with family and grow his delicious blackberries. Jokingly, he called it the “Raymore” Estates! Even though he was a very quiet man, Jessie occasionally graced us with his sense of humor. On Sundays, he worshiped at the Warwick Assembly of God in the mornings and enjoyed fried chicken in the afternoons. To cherish his memories, he leaves behind his loving wife of 75 years, Alease Jenkins.
Jessie was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Anne Burl Jenkins. He is survived by his four children, Larry (Sandra), Deborah Bradshaw (Bill), Mark (Susan) and Ronald (Shandra). He will also be remembered by his eight grandchildren, Christopher Jenkins, Travis Jenkins, Dana Fehnel, Jason Jenkins, Heath Bradshaw, Dawn Humphries, Michael Jenkins and Sara Jenkins. His other blessings included 11 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Marilyn Matthews and Selma Hawkins and brother, Forrest O’Neal Jenkins.
The family will receive friends from 11:30 – 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, November 2, 2023 at Weymouth Funeral Home. A Graveside Service will immediately follow at 1:00 p.m. at Peninsula Memorial Park with military honors. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.
