The Family Will Have A Private Remembrance

On the evening of August 20, 2023, Edwin Huff Powell (1923-2023) died at his home in Williamsburg VA.   His family was with him at the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Margaret Bonday Powell; his son, Charles Powell (Susan Petriella); daughters, Suzanne Powell (Dan Spaeth), Lisa Powell, and Ellen Powell McFarland (Glen McFarland), and his grandson, Dominic Rocco Corbisello.

Born in Union Level VA, Edwin was the son of Annie Ogburn and Marcus Lundy Powell. He was brother to Alpheus Ogburn, Marcus Lundy, Jr, and Lucie Ellen. All were raised in South Hill, VA on their beloved family farm South Lawn.

He developed a passion for airplanes during his childhood that eventually led to his career as a Navy pilot.  In 1943 he left VPI to join the Navy and in 1945 was commissioned as an ensign to pursue training in aviation. From 1945 to 1964 he served as a Naval aviator, flying multi-engine aircraft in various patrol and transportation squadrons.

In 1964 Edwin retired from the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander. He went on to establish Windmill Point Oyster Company, a commercial venture that successfully cultivated and harvested oysters using a system he developed.

After retiring from the Oyster Company in 1976, Edwin continued to pursue his varied interests. He designed and built his family home in Williamsburg, and between mechanical tinkering and home building projects, he traveled to China, Italy, and across the United States.  He loved hunting and fishing with his son and nephews, and spending time with his family. 

He was a man of unusual ability and determination who gave his family the gift of longevity, loyalty, and unyielding love.
