Elizabeth Browning West Nuttycombe, 90, of Newport News, VA, passed away peacefully with family by her side on Thursday, March 30, 2023. Elizabeth was born in Richmond, VA to the late Edward Effinger and Alma Columbia Winslow West. She graduated in 1950 from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, VA and attended University of North Carolina, Greensboro before marrying Charles Wallace Nuttycombe of Richmond, VA in 1951.
She is survived by her children, Edward (Diane) Nuttycombe of Madison, WI, Charles Jr. (Deborah) Nuttycombe of Montpelier, VA, Stephen (Johnise) Nuttycombe of Newport News, VA, Pamela Nuttycombe (Wayne) Kirby of Asheville, NC, Graham (Susan) Nuttycombe of Newport News, VA and Jennifer Nuttycombe (Michael) Wilson of Newport News, VA; 15 grandchildren, Carolyn Nuttycombe, Kent Nuttycombe and wife, Amber, Meredith, Stephanie Sollenberger and husband, Matthew, Sarah, and Charles Nuttycombe III, Jessica Curran and husband, David, Morgan Mann and husband Wesley, West Nuttycombe, Hannah Kirby, Hamilton Kirby and wife, Crystal, Elizabeth Feagans and husband, Andrew, Alex Nuttycombe and wife, Taylor, Erin and Graham Wilson; 11 great grandchildren, Charlie, Teddy, Falcon, Nora, Henry, Palmer, Penelope, Bronx, Hudson, Beckett, and Berkley: her sisters, Joanne Stebick of Richmond, VA, Mary Faith Clark of Charlottesville, Kathleen Straight of Fairfax, and her brother, Stephen West of Richmond, VA.
Our mother was the one behind the scenes who truly gave her life to her family. We can never thank her enough for the sacrifices she made to be the rock of our home. She was not one to talk of her accomplishments, but we want to share with the world what our dad told us. She was an A.A.U. Junior Olympics swimming champion who was known by her peers as the one who was fearless in the pool and the one whose wins brought much attention. She chose a different path though. She met the love of her life, our father, in high school and chose marriage and children above all else.
She was a proud member of Saint Stephen’s Episcopal Church for over 50 years. She sang in the church choir and was a member of the guild. She worked as a swim instructor for the Girls Club; supported the Virginia Symphony; was a member of the Denbigh Plantation Garden Club and donated her time at her local voting poll for years.
Our mom’s words of wisdom: “Take one day at time,” “Somebody always has to be on duty” and “You have to pay your dues”
Our heartfelt thanks to Hazel “Big Mama” Roland and all of her caregivers.
You are dearly loved by your children and will be greatly missed.
