Sylvia Ann Willis Thompson was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at the age of 75.

She was born to Edwin and Catherine Willis in Newport News, Virginia. After graduating from Warwick High School in 1965, Sylvia married her high school sweetheart, Bill, on August 24, 1966. Together, they had four daughters and 56 years of marriage.

Sylvia graduated from William & Mary in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. It was very important to her and Bill to stay at home to raise their daughters. Once her children were of school age, Sylvia enjoyed a career in accounting and retired from BayPort Credit Union in 2008. She then launched a successful quilting business, S&B Quiltworks, which she ran for more than 10 years. She pieced her family’s lives together like a beautiful quilt. Her skills as an artisan covered more than fabric. Sylvia passed on her talent for cake decorating to her daughters as well as a love for sewing, cooking, and all things crafting. Traveling was also one of her favorite pastimes. She loved planning family vacations using AAA maps, guidebooks, and TripTiks and served as chief navigator. In retirement, Sylvia and Bill took several cruises, including one to Alaska to complete her quest to visit all 50 states.

Sylvia is survived by her husband, Bill Thompson; her daughters and grandchildren, Carrie (Donald) Moore, Anthony, Christian, Adam, and Benjamin; Sheri (Darrell) Dorn, Heath, and Heather; Cathleen (Frank) Moore, Sam, and Caroline; Beth (Rob) Mann, Robyn, Lindsey, and Jack; her sister, Juanita (Don) Scripter and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 11: 00 – 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 11, 2023 at Weymouth Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Dementia Society of America. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.

So sorry to hear of your loss. Sylvia was a great quilter. She quilted my very first quilt and used a beautiful dragonfly design, She did an exceptional job and 15 years later, I am still enjoying the pretty quilt that she designed. She will be missed in the quilting community. God rest her soul. Wishing you comfort peace at this time.
