Edith Miller Green, 88, went home to be with the Lord on August 15, 2018. She passed away in Newport News, VA at her home with her two daughters and friends by her side, after a long battle with cancer.
She was born on October 18, 1928 on a farm in Windford, SD to Clyde C. Miller and Edna M. Miller. She moved to Cheyenne, WY after marrying John R. Green in 1949. She worked as a credit manager for Montgomery Ward until she moved to Newport News, VA in 1953. From 1955 to 1973 she worked for Carp Inc. as a bookkeeper. Then she went to work for Husky Plumbing as a bookkeeper until 1986; from there she worked for Universal Cooling & Heating until 2005 as a bookkeeper. She was also employed at Mennowood Retirement Community. Then she went to work for Life Way Christian Book Store, which she loved dearly, until she retired in 2015.
While Edith lived in Seaford, VA she became a member of Seaford Baptist Church where she served the Lord as a Sunday School teacher and did numerous volunteer jobs for Seaford Baptist Church before moving to Newport News, VA. She then became a member of First Baptist Church of Newport News where she has been a member for over 30 years. Edith went on to become an ordained Deacon at First Baptist Church of Newport News for 24 years and later honored as a life Deacon. She loved her volunteer jobs as head of the Food Pantry Program, counting money and other various jobs where she was able to serve the Lord. Edith was such a loving, gentle and caring person. She was loved by all who came in contact with her. As a child of God herself she was always thankful for a wonderful life, good health, a host of friends, but above all she was most appreciative for her loving, praying church family she had at First Baptist of Newport News. She was very strong in her faith and rarely missed any church service or Sunday School. Edith will be sorely missed but not forgotten.
Edith Miller Green was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters; and a baby daughter. Survivors include two daughters, Gloria Green McGrew of Charleston, SC and Cathy Green Elias of Kilmarnock, VA; five grandchildren, Michael May, Stacy May, Seth Elias, Joseph Elias, and Caleb Elias; and eight great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00am on Monday, August 21, 2017 at First Baptist of Newport News, 12716 Warwick Blvd. Newport News, VA 23606. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.
