It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Carolyn Sue Hamblin (Scoggins), 83, on March 15, 2022 at Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center. She was a lifelong resident of Newport News and a graduate of the class of 1957 at Warwick High School. She worked as a telephone operator and bank teller until she began her career as a civil servant for the Federal Government where she proudly served at Naval Weapons Station, Yorktown and at the Army Training Support Center at Fort Eustis until her retirement in 2005. She was grounded in her Christian faith and was a longtime member of Warwick River Mennonite Church.
Carolyn’s greatest joys were her children, grandchildren and your children. She cared deeply for them and was dedicated to them always. She never missed an opportunity to shower children with love, which was evident by all the blankets she knitted for newborns, the birthdays she always remembered and holidays where she played secret Santa. She took great pride in her family and used every opportunity to talk about her father’s work at the Newport News Shipyard, Naval Weapons Station and as a business owner. She was beaming when she’d talk of her daughter’s contributions as a mechanic at the Women’s Auto Clinic, as a nurse at The Gloucester Mathews Free Clinic and Riverside Hospital. She sung praises of her son and his work at Dino’s Pizza Shop, Canon Virginia and Damuth Services.
She loved to share stories of her life growing up in Betsy Lee Gardens and on Jefferson Avenue in Newport News. She cherished memories of her times at Parkview Community Center with friends and summers at her family home on the river in Ware Neck, Gloucester. During her retirement she looked forward to keeping in touch with lifelong friends Joyce Spanos, Kitty Dale and Lois Gates and orchestrating lunches with “the old gang.”
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents Harry Berry and Hattye Elder Scoggins; much missed brother, H.B. Scoggins and special friend, Milton Stacey. She is survived by her children Kimberley S. Hamblin, Arthur R. Hamblin, Jr. and his wife, Heather; three grandsons, Russell Blair, William and Jackson Hamblin; sister-in-law, Dina Fentress (Gary) and nieces, Amy McCarthy (Jon) and Allison Turkovich (Erik).
A visitation is being held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 19, 2022 at Weymouth Funeral Home. A funeral service, led by Reverend Carl Mericle, will begin at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home. If you wish to make donations in her name, please send them to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.
