Carolyn (Jan) Hooks, 80, of Hampton passed away on Friday, December 2, 2022. She was born in Waynesville, NC and had been a Peninsula resident for the past 70 years. Jan was employed as a crane operator with Newport News Shipbuilding and retired after more than 25 years of service.
Jan was a founding member and organizer of United Steel Workers Local 8888, served on the grievance committee and several board positions. She was also a member of the Steel Workers Retirement Group. Jan was a long-time member of West Hampton Baptist Church, where she volunteered with the Thursday Lunch Ministry.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents, Nathan (Frog) Hill and Vena Hill; a sister, Freda Hollis; her twin sister, Annette H. Warren and son-in-law, Neal A. Brown. She is survived by her daughters, Dawn Brown of Hampton and Kathy (Charles) Wickline also of Hampton; her grandson, Andrew (Kelsey) Brown of Colchester, VT; her granddaughter, Kelly Brown of Pinehurst, NC and her great-grandchildren, Christopher and Maisie Brown of Vermont.
Appreciation is extended to two of her special friends, Cheryl and Cynthia Moran, of Hampton, for their care and friendship to Jan.
A Memorial Service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 20, 2022, in the chapel of Weymouth Funeral Home, 12746 Nettles Dr., Newport News, VA. Interment will be at the Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesville, NC, at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made out to the Thursday Lunch Ministry, West Hampton Baptist Church, 631 Aberdeen Rd., Hampton, VA 23661. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.
