Beverly Virginia Sutton of Newport News passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 29, 2018 at the Williamsburg Hospice House, at the age of 75. Beverly was born February 12, 1943 in Pittsburgh, PA as the first daughter of Albert and Bernice Sutton. She grew up in Pittsburgh, graduated from Schenley High School, attended West Virginia State University, and graduated from Christopher Newport University. While attending West Virginia State University, Beverly met her future husband, Dr. Melvin J. Sutton, Sr., who she was married to for 55 years. During the first 20 plus years of their marriage, Melvin Sr.’s career as an Army officer took them to several different countries and cities before they settled in Newport News. Beverly loved to travel, go on cruises, read, watch her shows, spend time with her family, and of course watching her beloved Pittsburgh Steelers. She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, wife, sister and friend. Our hearts are full and we will honor our mother’s legacy by being the children and grandchildren she wanted us to be.
Beverly is survived by her husband, Melvin Sr. of Newport News; daughter Sharon M. Sutton of Woodbridge, VA; son and daughter-in-law, Melvin J. Sutton, Jr. and Caroline P. Sutton of Williamsburg, VA; grandson Julian S. Sutton of McLean, VA; granddaughter Mariah E. Sutton, of Arlington, VA; grandson Damon R. Sutton, of Williamsburg, VA; sister Joan Howard (Sutton) of Pittsburgh, PA; niece Janelle Franklin (Howard) and husband Marc Franklin and children; and her special friends Darryl Jones and Daria Smith. She was pre-deceased by her parents, Albert and Bernice.
The family will receive friends from 11:00am – 12:00 Noon on Friday, August 3, 2018, at Weymouth Funeral Home in Newport News. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 12:00 Noon in the Weymouth Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, VA.
