Willie Ruth Smith, 83, a beautiful, nurturing wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2024.  Ruth was born in South Carolina. While attending church as a young lady, she met and married her one true love, Virgil.  Their dear love for one another was indeed the definition of everlasting. Together, they shared 67 years of marriage and had 3 beautiful children. A job opportunity eventually led them to Newport News, VA, where Ruth found her career working with children. She adored children; they were all so special to her. Ruth happily retired from Newport News Public Schools to enjoy hobbies such as traveling and devoting more time with loved ones. She enjoyed hosting social gatherings and cooking for everyone. No one left her house hungry. She loved music, dancing, and laughing endlessly while sitting in her sunroom. She was well known for her welcoming demeanor, fun, light-hearted energy, and spunkiness.  She enjoyed life to the fullest. Her smile would light up the darkest day.  Ruth leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and joy that will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, George Waco Logan and Irene Carter Logan; her son, Steve Smith; her dedicated husband, Virgil C. Smith; and her siblings Clayton Logan, Haskel Logan, Ilola Nix, Mildred Crooks, Evelyn Davis, Earline Meredith, and Ray Dean Logan.

Left to cherish her fond memories are her children, daughter, Fay Pipkin and son, Chris Smith; her grandchildren, Kerry Bland (Stephanie), Casey Spencer (Max), Logan Smith, and Katie Anderson; her great-grandchildren, Macy Spencer, Talen Bland, Lennon Bland, Jacob Pipkin, Kaden Smith, Isabella Thomas, and John Anderson and many extended family members and friends.

Her family would also like to extend a special thanks to the staff at The Evergreen who loved and cared for her each day. We appreciate each one of you.

The family will receive family and friends from 9:00-10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2024 at Weymouth Funeral Home. A funeral service honoring Ruth’s life will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2024 at Weymouth Funeral Home with interment to follow at Peninsula Memorial Park. Memorial donations can also be made to The Alzheimer’s Foundation in her honor.  Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.

Saddened to learn of Ruth's recent passing. She was a lovely lady, who opened her home to me as a teenage best friend to her son, Chris. Regards to all the Smiths.
