Renate E. Newman, 88, left peacefully for Heaven on Wednesday, May 3, 2023. She was born in Germany, and through a shared love of dogs, met Roy C. Newman of the U.S Air Force and a lifelong love ensued. She was a telephone operator in those earlier years, which suited her love of talking and helping others. While settled in the Hampton Roads area for the past 54 years, she sold furniture for GEX and Miller and Rhoads. She loved to sing in the choir at Hope Lutheran Church, social gatherings, and even made an appearance on “The Hot Shot Revue” in Milwaukee, WI. She belonged to the Tidewater German-American Society with many close German friends and was proud to be an American citizen. She loved dogs, having homed more than 50 in her lifetime, and championed all animal causes including the local wildlife.

She was preceded in death by husband, Roy C. Newman; son, Michael P. Newman and grandson, Michael Newman, Jr., and very recently beloved daughter-in-law, Robyn Newman. She is survived by her son, Bob Newman; 2 daughters, Linda Robinson (David) and Tina Greer (Gary); 7 grandchildren, Jason, Renate, Rachel, Stefanie, Zach, Alex, and Connor; 9 great-grandchildren, 1 niece, 3 nephews and their children.

A Memorial Service will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, May 15, 2023 at Weymouth Funeral Home with visitation to follow. Inurnment will be with her beloved husband at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in a private family ceremony later that week. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hope Lutheran Church, 1112 Todds Lane, Hampton, VA 23666, any animal charity such as Humane Society, Animal Aid Society, or ASPCA, or the Peninsula Food Bank, all of which she lovingly supported throughout her life. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.

I will always remember Renate as a joyful person who could uplift the spirit of anyone she met. Renate loved to sing and God blessed her with the most beautiful voice. Our prayers are with her family at this time. She knew Jesus as her savior and He welcomes her to eternal life in heaven.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences. I remember Renate fondly from Hope Lutheran Church but also because she worked with my mom Brita for years at Miller and Rhoads.
