Serving the Community Since 1960

John Lee Lockhart, M.D., died peacefully at Hospice House of Williamsburg on April 27, 2023. He was a resident of Newport News, VA for the past 48 years. Born in Fairmont, WV, John was the son of the late F. Okey and Betty Heldreth Lockhart. Dr. Lockhart graduated from WV School of Medicine in 1970. Serving in the USAF after graduation, he was the medical officer in charge of the clinic at Albrook Air Force Base in the former Canal Zone of Panamá. He was discharged from 3 years of military duty as a major. Internship and ob/gyn residency was completed at Riverside Hospital in Newport News. Dr. Lockhart practiced his specialty for 34 years. His retirement was in 2012 from Riverside Partners in Women’s Health.

Dr. Lockhart loved the outdoors, gardening and most of all, music. He played trumpet, guitar, and piano, which was his favorite expression of his musical talent. He also enjoyed composing songs, singing and playing piano for family and friends.

Left to cherish his precious memory is his wife of 55 years, Janet Lockhart. He was the proud father of Matthew Lloyd (his dear wife is Adele) and Truman Scott. Two adored granddaughters, Kennedy and Caroline, were his pride and joy. He is also survived by his beloved sister, Linda Lockhart Hedio, her husband Richard and their family, brother in law, L. Ronald Walker and special family friend, Paul Katz.

Services were private. If so inclined, memorial donations may be made to Virginia Living Museum; 524 J. Clyde Morris Blvd Newport News, VA  23601. Weymouth Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of this kind, compassionate man. Dr. Lockhart delivered my last (of 3) children. He was the best doctor I’ve ever had ~ because, he listened ~ and years later he really came through for me (via) sending me to John’s Hopkins for a medical issue that a # of other doctors overlooked. Decades later, he performed life-saving surgery on me, for which I’ll ever be grateful.
May he truly Rest In Peace.
May God comfort his family in their time of profound mourning, and may the Lord Jesus Christ give them peace, health & strength.
May their hearts be filled with gladness , until that great Day when He will wipe away all tears from our eyes.
